Strawberry Fields.

On this hot and sticky day that it was here in Toronto, we met up with some other families to go strawberry picking in fields Brampton.  I have to say that it took me back to my childhood of picking strawberries on a Saturday morning, eating more than we picked until we were nearly sick of them.

We took off for the farm in about midmorning, loaded Magdalene into the carrier for a nap while we took a tractor ride out to the fields of berries where there were throngs of people picking.  There were so many berries you could stand in nearly one place and pick a whole basket.  They were huge and juicy and soft.  Gabriel was more into saying "picking strawberries" with his toddler gusto than actually picking them.  In fact, he didn't even eat any!  But he loved to say strawberry and he loved most of all the tractor.  It was a mission keeping him in one place and away from the tractor long enough to pick a basketful and by the end I was dripping with sweat from carrying a warm Maggie on my back and running after Gabriel, but it was worth it!

I just have to say that I was really thankful to be with other mamas while there so they could help us get up and off of the tractor and carry a basket or so.  Sometimes navigating with two kids is a real challenge when you don't have a stroller.  It was clear that by the end, the children were done, and so was I.  As I loaded up the car and got the kids diapers changed, etc. things were starting to fall apart.  So, thank you to the perfect stranger with her two daughters who helped me untangle Magdalene from the carrier and hush her to get her settled so I could change the kids.  Thank you sooooo much!  It reaffirms my belief that there really are good people out there who are willing to give a struggling mama a hand!  Phew!

One thing to note is that these strawberries don't last long, so you've got to get on it with eating them, making something with them or freezing them.  They are a bit more tart but lovely with a little bit of sugar.  But don't let them sit around for long, not like that is usually a problem!

Don't you love how having children really makes you stop and take in a season in a really big way?  I mean, I hardly ever did this kind of thing before we had kids.  But it's really neat showing them where things come from and eating food that is so utterly fresh.  So very much looking forward to raspberries again this year too!  And maybe even peaches?  Let me tell you, there is nothing quite like a soft, sweet, juicy Ontario peach!  Nothing!

The Weekend :)

This past weekend, my friend Annie from London came to Toronto with her two kids and it was one crazy summer weekend to be sure!  Between visiting splash pads to ward off the heat and splashing around in the back yard, there was so much sun and activity that come yesterday evening I was so bagged.  It was a serious effort to stay awake until 9:00.  I was walking around like a suntanned zombie unable to accomplish anything.  The kids both konked out early and slept until 8:00 this morning, a first in nearly six months!

We are loving the splash pads so far this year.  We've gone and made new friends (always interesting hearing someone new's life story) and joined up with old friends (even better!).  Gabriel just truly and honestly has the best smile and hysterical shrieking giggle as he runs through the water.  I can tell you.  He as happy to keep going even after two hours.  We will certainly be found at Toronto's splash pads this year.

On Sunday, Annie and her girls came over to our place.  It was a riot!  The kids were jumping around in the pool, doing floats and rocket ships and blowing bubbles.  We pretty much crammed a whole summer's worth of activities into one day--pool, bubbles, water squirters, Popsicles, watermelon, sprinklers, nail painting (always Fiona's favorite part).  I think I was running around as much as the kids were.  Gabriel was obsessed with Eleanor and wanted to help her do everything, although not so sure she appreciated it all the time....  But it's kind of adorable how the "older kids" always want to "help" the younger ones, don't you think?

Baby Emily wanted to take a swim too....

Painted red for Canada Day!

It was a fun way to spend a Sunday.  We have so few left with our dear friends before they move to Calgary shortly! We are sure going to miss having them so close.

Birthday Boys Weekend.

Just had a lovely birthday weekend with my husband and inlaws.  Jordan and his stepdad share the same birthday, so it's an outstanding tradition to get together, no matter how far or how close we live, to celebrate whenever we can.  So we had a nice, quiet (cough*) weekend with them around our house, blowing bubbles, going on walks, going to the park and celebrating the big day a little bit early.  We were so glad to have such dazzling nice weather.

We carried on another longstanding tradition of bathtime serenades by Fizey.  Now that Magdalene is a little bit older, she was still up to join in the bathtime shenanigans and was equally mesmerized by Fizey's guitar and wanted to play it too.  She is just getting so curious about everything!  Especially food.  You can literally see her drooling over it and grabbing at everything to put it in her mouth.  It's going to be hard waiting for another month.  I hope she'll love fine food as much as her brother does!

The birthday celebrations were pretty fun this year.  Normally we've been away for it and not at home, so this year we thought we'd make it a bigger deal.  Apparently Chouchou and Fizey thought it was outrageous that Jordan bought a tent a few weeks ago so we can go camping and so he ended up with a whole pile of camping gear so we can take the kids.  The funny thing is that I LOVED camping as a kid and have many fond memories.  But Jordan always laughed and said that he'd never do it.  And then we had kids.  And now all of sudden there is this nostalgia for it.  Ha!  So we are pretty excited to hit the road soon for a little camping trip and try out all of his gear.

Happy Birthday Boys!  So glad you have your birthdays the same day so we have more excuses to get together!

Happy Summer!

Happy Summer, officially!  We've been lounging around like it's been summer for a couple of months now here in Toronto.  I think we basically skipped spring altogether and jumped right into hot weather.  The other day, after the kids were in bed, we sat in the backyard having dessert and chatting under the strung up lights until we could feel the dew starting to settle.

We thought back to where we were last year during the summer solstice--the Yukon, for Sean and Jeni's wedding, where we experienced the longest, sunniest days of the year possible and where the sky never actually got dark.  What a weird feeling!  Hard to believe that every day after this will start getting a little shorter...
