Around Our House Lately

Around our house lately, everything seems to be going fairly well.  Jordan is plugging away at his Masters due in October--mostly revising and editing and spending countless hours in the basement doing so.  Abe's eyes have never looked so good.  (In case you didn't know, Abe was diagnosed two years ago as having secondary glaucoma, was in excruciating pain and nearly had to have both his eyes removed until our ever diligent vet found the right medications).  We found a veterinary eye doctor here in Toronto who put him on some new medication, which worked immediately and we are all pretty happy about it.  The children are growing and eating and sleeping through the night (!!!!) and generally really content.  We are excited for nursery school to start soon and for the regular routines of fall. (Even if we are really sad to see summer go over the next few weeks).  We have a lot to look forward to this fall, including our big trip to Newfoundland for Chouchou and Fizey's wedding.

I can't believe how fast these two are growing!  Gabriel is talking in big sentences and it's a rare moment when I don't understand him.  Maggie is moving all over the place and just about to crawl any day soon.   She has gotten stuck under the sofa and under the chair.  I found her sitting up in her crib the other day. Gabriel is really excited for Maggie to grow up and be more mobile.  He keeps trying to flip her over onto her tummy and wanting her to learn to crawl.  All of his c's come out as t's.  "Tawl, baby tawl!" he says.  And just to prevent her from crying while on her belly, he tickles her, "Ticko, ticko."  And the two love having baths together--squirting and splashing and sharing toys.  Gabriel, of course, likes to be the boss.

Here are some other things the littles are up to:

Magdalene loves her big brother so much and wants to do every thing he does.  She has abandoned her baby toys in lieu of trains, trucks, airplanes and dinosaurs.  When he walks in the room, Magdalene shrieks and her arms and legs flail in the air with excitement.  She could be nearly sleep but the moment she hears his voice, she squeals and kicks and jolts wide awake.  It's like she hasn't seen him all week!  When really it's just been a couple of hours.

I don't know if many babies like blenders and other loud mechanical sounds, but the second our baby bullet blender comes on, Magdalene let's out a big loud, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"  as if she knows that her food is coming.  She is a voracious eater.  I cannot believe how quickly she took to food.  I think she's just so thankful I'll give her real food that she'll eat just about anything!

Dinosaurs are big in this house lately.  Everything is about dinosaurs--toys, books, movies, shows.  T-rex is the favorite.  Obviously.  That and the "brak-daw-wass."  Every page of every dinosaur book has a "BEEEEEg Daw-wass" on it.  His dinosaurs go in the sandbox, the car, the bath, get fed grass from the lawn, they get their teeth brushed sometimes, they have joined the occasional tea party and they get tucked in bed and kissed goodnight too.

When Gabriel's been out with his dad, the moment he gets home, he runs into the room where I am with his arms in the air.  "Hi Mom!"  When I pick him up, he gives me a fierce hug and then squishes my face between the palms of his sweaty little hands.  "It's cute," he tells me.  I wonder where he picked that up from?

The other day, we went down by the river to throw some rocks.  Along the way, I started picking flowers.  Gabriel was so excited.  All of his f's come out as s's "Pickin' a souwers." He wanted to pick them too to take home with us and so we came back with a fistful--a beautiful bouquet we put in Maggie's room.

Along the way back from the river, while picking flowers, we accidentally frightened a mama bird from her nest.  We stopped and I lifted Gabriel up to see the nest of newly hatched baby birds who were chirping loudly in protest.  As I set Gabriel back down on the ground, he made a big pouty face and with all the sadness in his voice that a little boy could muster, he said, "Babies sad.  Babies crying."  We had a big long chat all the way home and for days after about mama bird and the babies in the nest crying.  We talked about where daddy bird might be and how mama bird feeds the babies.  It went on and on, apparently leaving quite an impression.

It's so amazing watching these two as they grow and change and make us scratch our heads in confusion.  I'm not going to lie.  There are definitely some really, really hard days, especially the moment Gabriel turned two and both babies were up every couple of hours and night and then overtired and melting down over and over.  But I feel like we are moving past that and into a new stage with a whole new slew of required parenting skills, but also the sweetness and warmth and fun that two young children can bring at these ages.

The Ex

When my inlaws were growing up in Toronto, the Exhibition was the big summer event that everyone looked forward too all year long.  Not to be confused with your ordinary exhibition, the one in Toronto is truly spectacular.  I'm not sure if Torontarians take it for granted or not, but there is a lot going on for the couple of weeks that it is open.  It's not just rides and cotton candy, although the rides themselves are some of the biggest (and scariest) that I have ever seen.  There is a whole building dedicated to art and another to food.  Don't be tempted by the plethora of food trucks outside.  The food building is really where you want to head for some interesting and delicious treats--not your ordinary fare, things like cocoa-fried chicken with chocolate ketchup (which may sound strange but is actually amazing) or last year's disastrous cronut burger (a cross between a croissant and a doughnut with a maple-bacon jam smothering a hamburger patty in the middle) which made a plethora of people sick.

When my friend, Victoria asked us if we wanted to go, I wasn't quite sure.  Hot and crowded and enough junk food to rev up a two-year old into a small tornado.  But, as it turns out, it was busy, but not as packed as I thought the morning we went and they have a whole kiddie section, devoted to small children!  I was happy to find out that Gabriel was tall enough for at least half of the rides.  Gabriel was delighted by the train that went around in a small circle, the trucks, the motorbikes that did the same.  He hung on with such focused intensity, it was really adorable.  All the while, staring at the big roller-coaster next to the other rides.

Once our friends showed up, Tatiana, his best friend, brought a whole new level of excitement.  The two of them started running and squealing.  Tatiana's laughter is certainly contagious.  The horse carousel was one of the big favorites.  The two friends were hilarious to watch as they shrieked and laughed while they bobbed up and down on the carousel.   Our babies mostly slept on and off throughout the day (which is why there are not really any pictures of them) and Gabriel surprised me and slept for a long time in the stroller, which allowed us to enjoy more of the day there.  It feels like we spent most of the day trotting back and forth to washrooms for diaper changes or trying to find quiet places to nurse, but such is life with so many babies between us all.

But despite that, we got a bunch of rides in and even got to try out the roller-coaster!  Both Gabriel and Tatiana nearly backed out a couple of times, but when they saw that each other was going, they wanted to go on afterall.  And once they were in, they LOVED it!  And wanted to go again.  Gabriel clung on, his little knuckles turning white, and me with my arm around him, a tiny bit terrified.  Did I really bring my two-year-old on this rickety roller-coaster?!!?!?  But after he got off, he started talking and talking in his speedy-not-really-words-toddler-language, his arms flying around in the air in the shape of a big figure eight.  I think it left an impression.  What can I tell you, I knew Gabriel would be a bit of an adrenaline junkie from the moment I felt that first kick inside of me.

And so marks nearly the end of summer.  Sadly.  And soon September, the beginning of nursery school and new routines and fall leaves and apple picking shortly.  Is it just me or was this summer WAYYYYY too short?

Winnipeg Wedding: Rachael & Derek

A couple of weeks ago, Rachael, the sister of the Davey clan tied the knot with love of her life, Derek.  It was a gorgeous wedding.  It had a perfect combination of elegance and playfulness.  The venue for the reception was in a permanent tent set up on a large grassy property outside of Winnipeg.  The grounds were so pretty with fountains, a grassy area for lawn games and little picturesque nooks for pictures--fields, nests of trees, old cars and gardens.

Rachael was radiant and simply looked stunning, tall and elegant and poised, a true picture of grace and sweetness.  And Derek, so handsome.  My cousin, Rebecca remarked on how life and relationships can sometimes make these affairs so complicated.  And yet that this wedding was not like that at all.  It was so sweet and innocent and pure.

The ceremony was simple and short and the reception venue was perfect.  There were chandeliers and baby's breath, lemonade, tea and cupcakes, wine and great food including a sweet treat for the kids at heart, ice-cream sundaes!  It was clear how much Rachael and Derek love their nieces and nephews and obviously made this wedding work for them too--an early reception, green space for them to play on, bubbles, glowsticks, sparklers and coloring books.  It was fantastic!  Because the kids where all geared up and ready to party!  They coloured furiously during dinner, then stole cupcakes from the cupcake table and Gabriel grabbed hands with the littlest flowergirl and took her for an impromptu spin around the dance floor.  They ran around outside playing crochet during speeches, then got into the bubbles.  Finally, when the dancing actually started, they ripped around on the dance floor for awhile before playing with sparklers and glowsticks outside.

Magdalene got passed around and met family and friends and all sorts of new faces before she finally crashed and went to sleep in her stroller.  While Gabriel kept rolling with the party until nearly 10:30 before he fell asleep within seconds in the car on our way back to our rooms.  It's one wedding that I hope he remembers, because it sure was great!  And if he doesn't, well, there are pictures to remind him.

Rachael and Derek, your wedding weekend was so beautiful.  And we are so delighted we could be a part of your day--to witness your love for each other, the strength of your friendships and to meet your family.  Not only did you throw an amazing celebration to start off your lives together, full of bonding opportunities and time together with family.  You created some wonderful memories for all of your guests through the speeches, the opportunities to wander the property and chat and those playful touches that really made the day so unique.  May your love for each other grow and grow.
