Fireworks!

Happy BC Day!!  I love summer holidays, especially when we get to spend them together as a holiday.  Lucky for us, Jordan was home for the weekend so we could spend it together with Amy and Harrison and our friend Steven.  It seems like most people go away for the long weekend, but not us, we are just enjoying sticking close to home--especially since listing our house and with our move eminently on the horizon.

We were able to make a go of it and be in Vancouver to see the "Festival of Lights" and Airshow until almost midnight.  A decision that we'll never regret.  Gabriel was amazing and actually slept in the next day.  What?!  I know, this kid is amazing.  What a great night--it was like a family date!

We ate burgers from Vera's burgers on Denman, while we sat on the grass overlooking the very packed English Bay, waiting for the Airshow to start.

As the sun was setting, a small prop plane came speeding through English Bay.  Gabriel was very enthusiastic about the whole thing, you know, in his own way.  He watched very intently, making airplane sounds while his head and pointer finger zipped back and forth.  He watched as the plane zigzagged through the bay and up into the sky before taking spinning nosedives toward the water.

Gabriel brought his little matchbox cars, his latest infatuation, which he drove all over our picnic blanket, our legs, shoulders and the dirt around us before stuffing them into the front of his little jean jacket so he wouldn't lose them.  There may have been one matchbox casualty of the day--a car that went missing, but that's ok!

We were surprised we were able to last through until the end of the fireworks show without Gabriel going to sleep and without a tear.  Once the fireworks started, Gabriel was glued to them.  Mostly he stared in wonder but occasionally we heard the odd "Whoa!" and "Boom!" escape from his lips.  I think it was the longest he sat still in his young active life--those 30 minutes watching the fireworks.  They were beautiful!

I have always thought that fireworks were pretty neat, but it was actually a lot more interesting watching Gabriel's reaction to them.  And for the first time in my life, I actually wasn't cold for fireworks--not with two of my own little personal heaters, Gabriel and JanBug.
