PEI: Our Favorite Beach for Littles

One of the last days in Prince Edward Island with my sister she took us to Kepploch Beach in Stratford, just outside of Charlottetown.  It is definitely our favorite beach for littles.  We hit it at the perfect time of day--the sun was late in the sky and the tide was low which is really the only time to do this beach, so make sure you check the tide schedule!

Before our eyes was the dream of every wild child.  Puddle after puddle after puddle with 100% freedom to jump in each and every one of them. We donned our water shoes** and the kids took off squealing with delight, Gabriel running and leaping into every puddle, determined to get each one.  And Magdalene laying down and rolling around in the warm puddles and splashing her feet.

The red sand was quintessentially Prince Edward Island and the red cliffs in the background were lit up in the evening light. Each puddle was a shallow reflective pool warm from the day's sunshine and filled with all sorts of small sea life--in particular schools of minnows, seaweed and hoards of little crayfish who scampered around fighting over their meals.  We picked them up by their shells and watched as they peeked out at us, cautiously reaching with their little claws checking to see if it was alright to come out only to jump back inside of their shells upon feeling the palms of our hands in lieu of sand.

We were all enjoying the evening light when my sister stepped on a bar clam and deeply cut her foot, requiring a trip to several unopened clinics and emergency and finally a visit to the doctor to have four stitches put in.....  I am sure she'll be off her feet for awhile.  Yes, so wear those sandals at this beach!
