A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine recommended a climbing gym in Etobicoke called Boulderz. It's not a kids climbing gym technically, but they do have a kids section. Gabriel and Maggie, obsessed with all things Paw Patrol, definitely love to climb things. And for about a year now, Gabriel has started loving pretending to put himself on belay to "climb" and "repel" down the stairs or whatever climbing surface he can find.
Since he was one, Gabriel has always loved string. Anything from ropes to dental floss. Now, this might sound alarming, letting your child play with string. But let me assure you, it is done with adults in the room. He has a wild and active imagination and these things keep him busy and playing for HOURS. Trying sting to books and toys and baskets and then pulling them up and lowering them down over the stairs.
So when I told him we were going rock climbing, he was beyond excited. And the moment he saw that winch at the top of the rock climbing wall. Heart. Burst. Open. He was over the moon. My athletic little guy is such a natural for almost anything sports. And this was his thing for sure. Here is a little video of him the first day. He barely needed any coaching and just went to it! Over and over again, mastering the wall.
And Maggie wasn't shy either. Of course, it is taking her awhile to get the hang of it. But with an older role model walking her through it, it won't be long.
Future rock climbing family? I think so! Missing Squamish these days and those amazing rocks we used to climb from time to time! I think we'll probably be back for a visit in our future.....
