When I was a kid, our house was the place where people sent their kids to play outside. My friends would come over in their lovely little dresses and go home all mucked up from playing around in the pond and the stream behind the house, digging trenches and making mud pies. We would build forts and make frog habitats. While we don't have a huge backyard for the kids like the one from my childhood spent in the country, I hope that we can get really creative with the space and allow the kids to get covered in dirt and play really hard just the same.
Today was a beauty day--sunny and warm. I think we are in for a nice stretch of weather ahead of us and it finally feels like spring. This weekend we pulled together somewhat the beginning of a dirt city, inspired by my friend Sam. There is still a lot of work to do to make it truly great, but it was a good start. So far the kids have spent hours in it, sifting through rocks and sand, loading trucks, mixing it altogether, burying cars.
We
had a pretty fun weekend putting it altogether, with several visits to the Home Depot and we are looking
forward to a spring/summer/early fall spent mucking around back there.
