Part of Cottage Life is eating, isn't it? Swimming, boating, relaxing, eating. And ice cream is a staple to be sure. Especially in a place that makes such fantastic ice cream. Kawartha Dairy makes the best best and we were pretty excited to find in our local grocery store too. But isn't it funny how a bowl of ice cream at the kitchen table isn't nearly as exciting as going out for a cone in the middle of the day? Maggie got to try her first bit of chocolate ice cream and let me tell you, there is no going back! Both hands in the ice cream and she shoved it right in. We have bred another chocolate fan. I couldn't be more pleased.
Eating ice-cream is still a full-body experience.
There was plenty of swimming at the lake too. But it's funny how our little water boy was a little nervous when he couldn't see the bottom, even with a life jacket on. But the moment mama became a shark, or a whale or a dolphin (but mostly a shark) chasing after him, he was completely won over. I guess we've been watching a little too much "Finding Nemo" lately because that seems to be the latest infatuation. We'd use our pool noodles as fishing rods and casting them into the lake to catch sharks that would tug excitedly at our rods and almost pull us in. Gabriel thought this was hilarious and kept asking to do it over and over again, shrieking and giggling. Oh man, I would do just about anything ridiculous to hear him giggle his full-bellied laugh that makes his shoulders shake and almost fall over. Magdalene got a little taste of the water too and she did pretty well, I'd say. I'm sure they will both be water hounds over the next few years.
In the evenings, we would sit outside around the fire pit with socks pulled up over the ankles of our jeans and sweaters too to ward off the mosquitoes. And we would talk with family who had stopped over on the boat for a visit. We would eat pie after pie after pie from the local bakery, that happens to make the most amazing peach-cherry pie you have ever tasted. I planned on stopping by and picking up three for the freezer, but we ran out of time on the way home.
We got to have visits with family on the lake too--cousins and aunts and uncles. Gabriel was so in love with the TWINS--the cutest little boy cousins ever! I cannot believe it was just last year that little Basil was sleeping with his chubby arms and legs sprawled out on my baby bump. And here we are this year, with Maggie here and Basil and Archer toddling around just learning to walk!
And Gabriel found a new best doggy buddy--Norry, who will chase everything he throws for hours and hours without giving up. Here is to hoping we can make this an annual event--a week on the lake with family. Fully embracing cottage country, Ontario!
